The Municipality of Aarhus is a politically governed service organisation in Aarhus. As a result, a number of characteristics distinguish the Municipality of Aarhus from private enterprises, cultural institutions and other organisations in the city.

City Council

The City Council is the governing body of the Municipality of Aarhus. The City Council is like a board of directors which is elected by the citizens every four years.

City Executive Board

The daily management of the Municipality of Aarhus is in the hands of the City Executive Board. The City Executive Board is like a board of executives and consists of the mayor and the five aldermen.

The members of the City Executive Board agree much of what concerns the running of the municipality before adoption by the City Council. The 33,000 municipal employees then set to work implementing the decision.

Servicing citizens and businesses

Unlike many private enterprises, the Municipality of Aarhus does not engage in production, but in servicing citizens and businesses in Aarhus.

The services provided are very different. They cover everything from childcare and rubbish collection to the issuing of health insurance cards and conducting marriages.
